Ever glanced at a neighbors lawn "green" with envy (pun intended) and thought why doesn't my lawn ever look as pristine?

The following are best practices to help with learning lawn mower secrets you can use to resolve most Quality of Cut issues when mowing your lawn:

First and foremost refer to the operator's manual for your machine if available; in it will be details outlining how to use the mower safely and effectively.

Before beginning to mow, quickly observe the lawn for potential obstructions: such as rocks, stones, branches and other debris that may be kicked out from under the machine and potentially harm you, the operator, or nearby bystanders. These obstructions will dull the cutting blade quickly.

It is always best practice to mow when grass is dry; and the speed at which you mow should resemble normal walking speed.

Try to cut no more that 1/3rd of the grass height at a time. In addition, because of general weather conditions, in the spring with expected increased rainfall and lower temperatures, the height of cut can be decreased, so grass can generally be cut shorter. In the summer season, where rainfall is usually decreased and temperatures rise, it is best to raise the depth of cut and effectively cut less.

It is normally best practice to not go more than 4 days between cuts. If of course you cannot maintain this general cutting interval, cut the longer than normal grass length at a higher height, then re-cut again 2 days later to the desired height.

If you must stop mowing, turn off the machine at a spot already cut, to avoid clumps of grass being left on lawn.

Mow your yard in different directions to promote straight grass growth.

Other things to consider:

Try to avoid taking a full width of cut, ensure underneath deck is cleared of grass clippings and buildup, and if the unit is equipped with a side discharge chute, allow this side to pass over previously cut sections of the lawn for proper air flow and clipping dispersal.

By following the general tips outlined above many operation-related issues to lawn mowing can be prevented. Next we will discuss steps you can take to prepare your lawnmower before use and asses the blade!

Never the Norm!

Your dream lawn is possible!
